Is Cheap Video Production Worth It? The Real Cost for Ads

Is Cheap Video Production Worth It? The Real Cost for Ads
    TL;DR

For ads, cheap video production usually isn't worth it. The video invoice is the small number; the ad spend you put behind the video is the big one. If a weak video wastes that budget, the "savings" cost you more than a better video would have. Judge a video by the return on ad spend (ROAS) it produces, not by its price tag.

Is cheap video production worth it? For organic posts, sometimes. For paid ads, rarely. A cheap video saves you money once, on the production bill, and then you spend far more pushing it in front of people with ads. If the video doesn't sell, every ad dollar behind it is wasted. The real comparison is not videographer price vs. agency price. It's what each one returns on the same ad budget.

Cheap Video vs. a Real Video Ad Team: Same Budget, Different Results (51 seconds). A scripted skit played by actors: the people, dollar amounts and ROAS figures in it are fictional and are not client results.

Why does a cheap video cost more than its price tag?

A cheap video costs more than its price tag because the production invoice is only the entry fee. Once a video becomes an ad, you pay the platforms every day to show it, and over a campaign that media spend usually dwarfs the video bill. So the real question is how much ad spend the video burned, and what it brought back. That's the joke in our skit: same budget, same platforms, and only one owner is making money.

What is ROAS, and why does it decide whether a video was worth it?

ROAS (return on ad spend) is the revenue your ads generate divided by what you spent on them. Google Ads defines it as the conversion value you get for each dollar spent on ads, and gives the example of $5 in sales for every $1 in ad spend, a 500% ROAS (Google Ads Help, About Target ROAS bidding).

ROAS is a revenue number, not a profit number. To know if a campaign makes money, compare it with your margin:

    Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ your gross margin.

    • 50% margin → you need a ROAS of 2.0 just to break even.
    • 40% margin → 2.5.
    • 30% margin → 3.3.

That's why the skit owner with a ROAS of 1.6 isn't profitable: he'd need a gross margin above 62.5% just to break even. The skit's numbers are made up; the math is real, and it's the math to run on your own campaigns.

Does the quality of the creative really change ad results?

Yes, more than any other factor you control. In a study of five drivers of ad sales lift (creative, reach, targeting, recency and context), Nielsen and Nielsen Catalina Solutions (2017) found that creative quality contributes as much to a brand's in-market success as all the other factors combined. When creative is strong, it drives up to 89% of the result for digital advertising. When creative is weak, sales lift is weak too.

Your audience notices. In Wyzowl's Video Marketing Statistics 2026 survey, 89% of consumers said video quality affects how much they trust a brand. Yet only 32% of video marketers measure video ROI through bottom-line sales, and 17% don't even track their video spend. That's how a "cheap" video runs for months without anyone noticing it loses money.

Cheap videographer vs. a full video ad team: what's the difference?

    Cheap videographerFull video ad team
What you pay forFilming and an editStrategy, concepts, scripts, filming, actors, editing
ScriptsUsually yours to writeWritten to sell, approved by you before the shoot
ConceptsOne idea, filmed onceSeveral distinct angles, so you can test what sells
On cameraYou and your staffActors, plus you where it helps
Running the adsSomeone else, or youThe same team that made the videos
Who owns the resultNobody past deliveryOne team, accountable for ROAS
Real costLow invoice, plus the ad spend it wastesHigher invoice, judged on what the ads return

A videographer can be the right call for event coverage or a one-off brand video. For ads, the job is bigger than filming.

What should you ask before hiring someone to make your video ads?

    Ask about results, not cameras:

    1. Who writes the scripts, and do I approve them first?
    2. How many different concepts will we test? One idea filmed three ways is not three concepts.
    3. Who runs the ads and reads the numbers? If it's you, you're managing the project.
    4. Will you report views, or ROAS and cost per lead?

If a vendor can't answer these, you're buying footage, not ads.

    ❓ FAQ

Is a $1,500 video good enough for Facebook or Instagram ads?

It can be, if the script, hook and offer are strong. The price matters less than whether the video converts. Test it with a small budget, check the ROAS against your break-even, and stop it fast if it's below.

What is a good ROAS for a small business?

Any ROAS above your break-even point (1 ÷ gross margin) makes money on the ad spend. A business with 40% margins breaks even at 2.5. Set your target from your own margins, not from someone else's benchmark.

Why do agency video ads cost more than a freelancer's?

You're paying for strategy, scripts, actors, several concepts to test and editing, and with a team like ours, running and tracking the ads. Compare both on what the ads return.
