Why Is It Important to Interview Your Own Customers?

Why Is It Important to Interview Your Own Customers?
    ๐Ÿ“‹ TL;DR

You do not have to write the perfect pitch. The best ad you will ever get is not written by you โ€” it is spoken by your own customer. Interview your customers on camera, ask about their full experience, and use their exact words as the script.

Why is it important to interview your own customers?

Because you are biased and they are not. As the owner, there are positive things you simply cannot say credibly about your own brand โ€” a restaurant owner saying their food is amazing is never as convincing as a customer saying it. Interviewing your own customers gives you objective proof, real language, and answers to the objections your prospects are already thinking about.

Why is your customer the best ad you will ever run?

No copywriter beats a real buyer explaining why they bought. Their words carry proof yours never can: you are selling, they are describing. Social proof is one of the strongest assets you have for attracting new customers, and in short-form vertical video it can take several shapes โ€” customer interviews, product reactions, testimonials, Google reviews, customer experiences, and before-and-after stories. Instead of claiming your product or service is good, let customers say it for you.

What makes a customer interview different from a review form?

A customer interview is not a survey and not a review form โ€” it is an actual conversation. You are not asking them to perform, you are asking them to explain. That distinction is the whole point: a form gives you a rating, a conversation gives you the real reason someone bought. Customers often buy for a different reason than the one you are marketing, and their language, hesitations and comparisons are raw material for your next marketing angles. It replaces guessing.

What should a customer interview cover?

A strong customer interview explains the journey, not just the verdict. The cleanest way to structure it is an Epiphany Bridge, in six steps:

    1. The internal situation before โ€” how they felt before discovering the company: their concerns, frustration, expectations, what they wanted to change, what they were hoping to find.
    2. The external situation before โ€” the visible facts: previous results, circumstances, the problems they were experiencing, numbers or measurable details, what they had already tried.
    3. Their skepticism โ€” the doubts they had before buying: about the company, the product, the expected result, the price, or whether it would work for them.
    4. How their concerns were overcome โ€” a conversation, a recommendation, a review, the company's process, the quality of the product, the experience with the team.
    5. The external result after โ€” what happened: the result, their experience using the product, observable changes, numbers, what they specifically enjoyed.
    6. The internal result after โ€” how they feel now: satisfaction, confidence, relief, happiness, trust, and whether they would recommend the company.

Which questions should you ask when you interview your customers?

    • What was your experience before discovering our company?
    • What were you expecting before working with us or trying the product?
    • Did you have any doubts before moving forward?
    • What convinced you to try it?
    • What was your experience during the process?
    • How did you feel after trying the product or service?
    • What result did you receive?
    • Would you recommend it to someone else โ€” and why?

Ask the customer to repeat the idea of the question inside their answer. Instead of "It was really good," you want "My experience eating at the restaurant was really good." Your voice is usually cut from the final short-form video, so the answer has to stand on its own without the question.

Where should you film a customer interview?

Film the customer interview in an environment that matches the company, the product, the service and the experience. A restaurant testimonial belongs inside the restaurant or somewhere connected to the food; a home services testimonial belongs in the finished space. The background gives context and makes the testimonial feel connected to the brand โ€” which is one reason we shoot on location across Tampa Bay rather than in a studio. It is the same logic behind choosing the right street interview format: the setting is part of the proof.

Why do their words make the best script?

Use their exact phrasing in your videos โ€” not a rewritten, "professional" version. Real language always outperforms marketing language, because it names the doubt your prospect has right now in the words they would use themselves. You know your product too well to see it the way a stranger does; your customer still remembers the hesitation, the objection, and the moment they said yes. That moment is exactly what your next video needs. Planning those interviews, writing the questions, filming and editing them is what we do at The Alpha Omega Hub: 10 tailored short-form videos, first versions within 10 days after the shoot.

    โ“ FAQ

Is a written Google review enough?

It helps, but a filmed customer interview shows a real person, their tone and their reaction. Reviews are social proof; interviews are social proof you can cut into video.

What if the customer is not comfortable on camera?

Do not ask them to perform, ask them to explain. Conversational questions about their experience get natural answers from people who would freeze reading a script.

Why ask them to repeat the question in the answer?

Because the interviewer's voice is usually removed in the edit. "My experience at the restaurant was really good" works alone; "It was really good" does not.
